Personal Biography
Hello there! I’m Jordi Casadevall Franco, a software engineer with a Computer Engineering degree from the University of Girona.
I come from a family of creators and builders. My great-grandfather was a carpenter, a tradition upheld by my grandfather and father for over a century. My grandfather, an innovative soul, was the first in town to balance carpentry with electronics. Self-learning (in that time, using post mail courses), he created radios and televisions for our community from spare parts. Later, he was introduced to computing with the famous Sinclair ZX Spectrum (also the first computer I played with).
This environment of technical creativity shaped my childhood and laid the foundation for my career in technology. As you can image, my fascination with computer science blossomed early and has led me to a wide range of projects and companies.
But my passion for creating doesn’t end with my current specialty (full-stack websites). Whether it’s designing video games, 3D printing telescopes, working on opensource projects or just bringing to life an idea that sparked at the right moment, I’m in. For me, learning never stops and technologies are the tools I use to build solutions. I’m of the belief that every creation contributes, in some way, to improving the world.
A major turning point in my life was the birth of my daughter, Freia, in 2023. This profound experience cultivated a deeper sense of responsibility and empathy in me. Becoming a father has enriched my understanding of diverse perspectives, and these lessons extend to my professional life, enhancing my interactions and problem-solving abilities.
When I’m not absorbed in the world of technology, you’ll find me reading, playing videogames or painting miniatures. It’s my zen moment, a welcome break from the screens. Reflecting on my journey, it’s clear that computers and the internet have greatly influenced my life, both professionally and personally. My life has been a mix of learnings, friendships, and adventures. And yet, I believe the journey of continuous learning and creating is far from over.
Having a personal website is an idea that has been around my head for years, paused several times due to lack of time. This is a place to show my work, my hobbies, my dreams and my thoughts. In summary, my story.
Welcome.
Professional Biography
The firsts years of university helped me learn a wide range of foundation topics in computer science that allowed me to join other projects, such as a 6-month stay as a junior programmer in the MMORPG (Massively multiplayer role-playing game) Exile Online or the videogame that I designed for Android called Agility, today with more than 3000 downloads.
This initial projects and some good grades allowed me to get a scholarship to work in a research group of the university called BCDS (Broadband Communication and Distributed Systems) in the ViTAM project and SpeakCat. I combined this experience with my studies to get an enriched experience of my stay at the university.
As a demonstration of all I progressed these years, my best friends and I decided to design and implement a startup as our final project degree. Botmessaging was born and it was a success as a project, but in the end we decided not to continue it after completing the degree.
All this experiences in projects showed me the importance of commitment and working as a team (maintaining a good relationship with co-workers) to achieve good results.
Right after finishing my degree, I moved to Barcelona to venture into the world of IT consultancies. In Quantion I learned to deal with clients, work with demanding deadlines, agile methodologies and team management. It was very intense.
My first role at Wikiloc was Platform Engineer. This position allowed me to broaden my knowledge by exploring and finding synergies between various technologies. Moreover, my work and creations became part of something much larger. Advanced aspects like scalability, performance, and security became my daily focus, contributing to a project enjoyed by millions of people.
I try to combine work, family and friends with free moments in which I can dedicate myself to my own projects that help me shape ideas and play with new technologies.
In 2019 stepping into the role of a Senior Software Engineer was a significant milestone in my career journey. In this capacity, I have had the privilege to contribute to all the major developments of the company over the past four years. From idea to execution, I’ve had a hand in almost every pie, providing me with invaluable insights into the diverse facets of our business.
In 2020 the role expanded beyond coding to encompass Project Management, pushing me to refine my skills in team management, resource allocation, and estimation of requirements and costs. This experience has not only augmented my technical skills but also honed my ability to lead and inspire a team to bring our shared vision to fruition.
I was entrusted with the responsibility of implementing purchase integrations, involving intricate work with Google Play, Apple Store, and Stripe. Navigating the complexities and business requirements of accountability integrations, I ensured a seamless interface for our users, further enhancing their experience and relationship with our products.
Simultaneously, I served as the main frontend developer for the company. Crafting user-centric interfaces and focusing on providing an optimal user experience have been key elements of my role. This dual hat of backend logic and frontend aesthetics has offered a comprehensive view of the product lifecycle, allowing me to understand and address the needs of our diverse user base effectively.
In reflection, being part of the Wikiloc’s team both as a Senior Software Engineer and Project Manager has offered me an opportunity to significantly impact a large community. The project and team continue to be fantastic collaborators, their drive, and passion a constant source of inspiration. It’s an honor to work alongside them, co-creating solutions that people love.
